The Adult Education Center at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton offers free classes to prepare adults in Conway and Perry Counties to earn a GED. ESL classes are also offered free of charge for anyone at least 18 years of age. For more information, call 215-4904.

ARVAC has announced that the Li-Heap Summer Cooling Program has opened! Li-Heap is a the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. This program is for assistance with electric only. It is a one-time payment based on family income and household size. Households or individuals must have proof of income for the previous month for all adults (over 18 years of age) members of the household. Persons in Yell, Pope, and Johnson County wishing to apply should contact their local ARVAC office. There is one located at 504 Union Street in Dardanelle and you can stop by on Monday thru Friday between 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and between 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Further information may be obtained by calling the office at 479 229-1392, Extension 116.

Friday, August 25th is the deadline to register for the 2017 Conway County Fair Rodeo Queens Contest to be held August 29th at the Willis Horse Farm near St. Vincent. The competition is open to Conway County residents age 5-21. The entry fee is $75. The next show in Russellville's Music Downtown at Sundown summer concert series will be held at Depot Park on August 26th featuring The Flat Five and Leah 7 and the Mojo Doctors. The show begins at 7:30 PM and will include surprise performances! Admission is free thanks to Little John Transportation Services, Orr Auto Mall, Saint Mary's Regional Health System, and the John G. Harris family. Concessions will be available, Music Downtown at Sundown is a project of Main Street Russellville, a local nonprofit organization committed to downtown revitalization. 

The UAMS Mobile MammoVan will provide on-site mammograms at the Perryville United Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 30th starting at 8:00 a.m. Pre-registration is required. Call 1-800-259-8794 to schedule an appointment.

The Fourth Annual Lake Bailey Canoe Race at Petit Jean State Park will take place Saturday, September 2. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Boathouse parking area, and the first heats will begin racing at 9:00 a.m. The event is open to canoes, kayaks or other human-powered watercraft. The registration fee is $15, and canoes and kayaks will be available for rent. Prizes will be awarded for best theme and costumes. Proceeds will go to the Petit Jean Extension Homemakers Club.

The Yell County Fair will be held from Monday, September 4th thru Saturday, September 9th at the Yell County Sylvia & C.W. Worthington Memorial Fairgrounds. The Junior Miss and Miss Yell County Fair Queen Pageant have been moved to Tuesday, September 5th, at 8:00 at Danville High School. The fair rides and carnival attractions will be set up Wednesday-Saturday, with arm bands available each evening. Local bands will provide free live entertainment.

The Conway County Fair will be held September 5-9 at the Conway County Fairgrounds on Highway 64 East in Morrilton. There will be animal shows, 4-H demonstrations, horticulture displays, rides, games, live music, arts & crafts, food and commercial vendors with various arts and crafts for sale. The Morrilton Rotary Club will hold its bingo stand at the fair on Friday and Saturday, September 8-9. Visit to learn more information.

The Russellville Knights of Columbus will be hosting their second annual FIRST RESPONDERS APPRECIATION EVENT Friday, September 8th at the Downtown Russellville Depot Park from 11 AM – 1 PM. Last year’s event, which commemorated the 15th anniversary of 9/11, was attended by over 100 First Responders from 10 agencies throughout Pope and Yell counties. A free lunch was served to over 300 attendees thanks to the generosity of several Russellville businesses. All Re’ved Up 4 Kidz Benefit Car Show hosted by Kevin Suter benefiting CASA of the 5th Judicial District will be held on Saturday, September 9th at 10 AM in the Brangus parking lot at 1509 E Main Street in Russellville. Entry is $20 per vehicle and any type of vehicle is welcome, including motorcycles. People’s Choice awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place! Vehicle entries must bring a bucket to place in front of their vehicles for people to place their money in to vote for the vehicles. There will also be a silent auction, horse and buggy rides, kids activities, food and more!! This charitable event will give 100% of proceeds to CASA of the 5th Judicial District. CASA advocates are all volunteers trained to provide advocates in the courtroom setting to children that have been placed in foster care in Pope, Johnson and Franklin Counties. CASA’s goal is to have an advocate for every child in foster care by 2020. CASA is a United Way member agency. The Arkansas Tech Small Business and Technology Development Center presents “Five Legal Issues All Business Owners Should Know” on Wednesday, September 20th from 10 AM – 12 PM. Learn how to minimize risks associated with five common legal issues, whether you are new to small business or a veteran. During this session, LynMarie Liberty-Ellington of Liberty-Ellington Law and Mediation will discuss corporation formation, personal liability, contracts, taxes, and debt collection. The Arkansas Tech Small Business and Technology Development Center presents a unique women’s workshop on Thursday, September 21st: “Passions to Profits: Starting a Woman-Owned Business.” Women who are considering entrepreneurship or have recently started their own small business are encouraged to attend this inspiring workshop. This interactive session includes information and exercises designed to help each participant assess their entrepreneurial aptitude and take an in-depth look at their business idea in order to develop next steps for turning their passion into a profitable business. National Public Lands Day hosted by Lake Dardanelle State Park will be held in conjunction with the Great Arkansas Cleanup on September 30, 2017 from 8 to 11 a.m. Following the cleanup, volunteers are invited to enjoy a free meal at Lake Dardanelle State Park. Each year, thousands of volunteers celebrate National Public Lands Day by volunteering their time for cleanup and beautification projects. During the event hosted by Lake Dardanelle State Park, teams are sent to public lands managed by a variety of agencies in the area to pick up litter and beautify them. Area businesses, clubs, churches, scouts, and others are invited to put teams together for the event. Supplies will be provided at no cost for the cleanup.
